Add to Memories Tell a Friend
By the way, after watching Death Proof (not all that great, but has some fun moments) I have come to the conclusion that the most under-rated actor in Hollywood is Kurt Russell.

Sometimes it's hard to remember when he stars in crap like "Poseidon" or "Miracle", but he can be really great. He's the best thing in Death Proof .... actually he's the best thing in all of Grindhouse. He's kind of funny and creepy and then becomes pathetic. He's really great.

Speaking of Grindhouse, I'd give it a 6.5 or so, and I'm not surprised it tanked at the box office. I liked Robert Rodriguez's movie (Planet Terror) more than Tarantino's (Death Proof) because it's kind of funny and gross and exciting, even though it's bad. It oscillates between being deliberately bad and just plain old bad. Tarantino's movie plays like a few long pointless scenes. Individual scenes are okay, but they never really build to anything. The first car crash scene is great though. And Kurt Russell gets all the great lines:
        STUNTMAN MIKE
So, how about that lap dance?

        ARLENE
I think I'm going to have to give you a rain check.

        STUNTMAN MIKE
Well since you'll be leaving in the next couple of days, that rain check will be worthless.
But that's okay. I understand if I make you uncomfortable. You're still a nice girl, and I
still like you. But I must warn you of something - you know how people say "You're okay
in my book" or "In my book, that's no good"? Well, I actually have a book. And everybody
I ever meet goes in this book. And now I've met you, and you're going in the book! Except,
I'm afraid I must file you under ... chickenshit.

Yeah, it's good dialogue. I think Tarantino gets horny writing dialogue for his favourite actors. Or maybe it takes those actors to deliver Tarantino's dialogue well. For example, while Russell is great, the performances of the girls in Death Proof come off a little forced, a little affected. (by the way, Sam Jackson still holds the "Best delivery of Tarantino dialogue" award. It's an honourary, lifetime award.)

The "fake trailers" in Grindhouse are okay. Rob Zombie's trailer sucked, but the rest weren't bad. The best scene in the trailers was from Eli Roth's trailer for "Thanksgiving". Michael Biehn is playing a detective. He and a cop are crouched next to a decapitated dead body
        COP
(touches the corpse, then tastes his finger)
It's blood.

        DETECTIVE
(looks away)
Son of a bitch

One hilarious moment. But the only one.

All in all, I'd say Grindhouse is probably worth watching, but I wouldn't want to sit through the whole thing. If you, like me, have Tivo, you can watch it in segments. It's better that way :).

Deathproof was pretty okay but the second half is what made me happy in my pants. Mmmmm detroit muscle.

The chase you mean?

It wasn't bad. It became good when Stuntman Mike started whimpering :).

By the way, did you know that Zoe (the girl on the hood of the car) is actually a stuntwoman in real life and doubled Uma in Kill Bill? This documentary shows her getting the job. It's worth seeing.

Nah the cars in general made me very happy in my pants. The chase scene was good. But the cars in the movie are what did it for me.

The chase was a good remix of Kill Pussycat Kill!

        STUNTMAN MIKE
Do I frighten you?

        ARLENE
(nods)

        STUNTMAN MIKE
Is it my scar?

        ARLENE
It's your car.

        STUNTMAN MIKE
Yeah, I know. Sorry, it's my mom's car.

AHAHAHA!!! They are good old fashion muscle cars. I wish I had the time to do mechanics. I'd love to buy one and fix her up.

"Grindhouse" ??
As you know, I lone Rodrigues. Even when his stuff is "just plain bad" I like it.

So "Planet Terror" was far and away my favourite.

It was my feeling coming out that "Death Proof" didn't stick to the shtick, that Tarantino was too busy getting off on his own dialogue to actually plot a movie.

Zoe was a bad casting choice to fill a role. But she was clearly having fun, both in what she was doing and that she was in front of the camera. So, I had fun watching her. It was like porn when the people actually (seem??) to enjoy it. Suddenly its something "more" even if its still just bad porn.

Other than those comments, I agree completely with your take on it all.

But...my question is...How are you watching "Grindhouse" and not "Planet Terror" and "Death Proof" separately?? I liked the whole event, and would do it again. But I have only seen them released separately, lacking trailers.

Finally, I want them to do another double-feature grindhouse. Unfortunately, the box office or even DVD sales won't support it I am sure.

Re: "Grindhouse" ??
That should be "love" Rodrigues.

Re: "Grindhouse" ??
How are you watching "Grindhouse" and not "Planet Terror" and "Death Proof" separately?

It aired that way on TMN recently. That's how it was originally released in theaters. It was part of the shtick - hearkening back to the concept of the "double feature!!" b movie, like at an old drive-in. It even had fake trailers, fake advertisements, and fake "Now, our feature presentation" graphics.

But audiences didn't go for it. So Harvey Weinstien decided to release them separately.

By the way, I agree with you completely that Tarantino didn't stick with the shtick. Rather than make something deliberately campy, he just made a movie filled with references to his old favourites. Hardly the same thing.

Re: "Grindhouse" ??
Oh Yes. I know. From the moment I saw the first trailer I was extremely excited for the release. Went saw it (near) opening night.

But now, I am very dissappointed with the separate release. I would pay extra for a collectors edition release of them together. Where separately, I don't know if I will buy either.

_I_ am their audience though. And as I have been reminded many times, that is not the common audience.

I thought it was overlong, and I hated "Planet Terror". I really wanted to like it, honest I did.. but I just couldn't. I also thought the same 'missing reel' shtick was both cheap and unnecessary in both films.

But, that's just me.

But did you like Kurt Russell in it? That's the important question.

I'd watch Kurt Russell shave, if that's any indication of what I think of him.
